FOUNDATION & PHILOSOPHY
The
Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) is
a soico-spiritual organisation with its roots in the Hindu Vedas. It
is based on the teachings of Lord Swaminarayan, which is over two hundred
years old.
Lord Swaminarayan stressed that it is only through a pure
heart and a spiritual guru that we can reach God and become eternally
liberated. Thus he laid down the rules of behaviour and moral conduct
for his devotees and ascetics in the religious Scripture called the
Shikshapaatri.
Swaminarayan philosophy emphasises that just as Lord Krishna
is worshipped as Radha-Krishna and Lord Ram as Sita-Ram, Lord Swaminarayan
(Purushottam) and his ideal devotee Swami Gunatitanand (Akshar) are
worshipped as Akshar-Purushottam. Thus it is through the god-realised
saint that one can climb to the zenith of spiritual excellence. In the
introduction to his book entitled "A New Face of Hinduism" author Prof.
Raymond Williams describes the Swaminarayan religion as a modern face
of Hinduism.
BAPS enjoys a worldwide following having more then 500
temples and 6000 centres all over the world.
THE INSPIRER
Pujya Pramukh Swami Maharaj is the 5th spiritual
successor of Lord Swaminarayan and the present leader of BAPS. His divine
personality, profound wisdom, divinity and simplicity have touched the
lives of millions. Despite his busy schedule Swami always finds time
to listen and counsel those he meets regardless of their class, colour,
creed or religion. By his mere presence doubts dissolve, confusions
clear and the mind becomes tranquil.
Swamiji is the guiding light and a friend to all, with
a loving heart, in which the whole world can live and spiritually mature.
ACTIVITIES IN AUSTRALIA
BAPS
has one temple in Sydney and one temple in Perth. In addition there
are 3 centres in Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne. BAPS is a non-profit,
tax exempt religious organisation.
The temple in Perth is located at 189 Hancock Street,
Doubleview and is on the northern side of Scarborough Beach Road. As
a socio-religious organisation we try to meet the needs of our ever
changing world, to improve the quality of life, creating a society free
of addictions, which is morally, spiritually and socially strong. Furthermore
we promote inter-religious and inter-cultural harmony and provide a
means for the people to progress in their spiritual quest. We strive
to channel the creative talent and energy of our youth, offering them
lots of opportunities to realise their full potential. The youth are
brought closer to their culture via prayers, devotional songs, spiritual
camps, multimedia presentations and sports.
The temple is open every day from 7.30 AM to 8.00 PM to
meet the requirements of the community.
